Decoding Geek Chic: The Aesthetic that means Business

Corporate Staples are never late to the party. These will make even an Andrea Sachs go “You look good!”

Remember Serena? Emily Charlton’s friend in The Devil Wears Prada? Although fractionally seen in the movie, she is the epitome of Geek Chic, an aesthetic and internet subculture making waves amongst netizens lately.

Flipping Books…Who is the Geek Chic Girl?

We are here to break it down for you, one paragraph at a time. As a whole, the word ‘Geek’ is derived from German geck meaning ‘fool’, referring to someone who was good for nothing. In the 1940s, geek became a synonym for techies. Sounds quite derogatory, isn’t it?

The advent of computers, gaming consoles and franchises like Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons till the 1980s brought a better light to the look. Newfound ‘Nerds’ became a symbolic term from ‘slouchy and mismatched’ to a superpower of ‘knowledgeable and unique’.

Being Nerdy hasn’t been Cooler!

As trend cycles refine themselves every few years (with the gap inevitably closing between how quickly a style will re-emerge), the knowledgeable nerds and the smart geeks have had a revamp from its ’00s counterpart.

The juxtaposition of chic with genius makes the look, and the personality, sexier, somewhere tapping into our corporate kinks. Case in point: if you are not attracted to Bella Hadid in her Fubu Reading Glasses, then please remove sapiosexual from your bio.

On-Screen Bookworms, Real-Life Masterminds

Power dressing takes full force in the Geek Chic dress code. Sweater, plaid pants, ties and the omnipresent glasses are some essentials to begin with. Neutral tones of light blue, beige and brown keep this netizen trend rooted to a corporate reality, while the bold skirts, prints and leather accents make it aspirational.

Styling as the Geek Chic Girl

For a practical approach beyond the ‘gram, here are some inspirations for your next outfit:

Midis, Vests and Leather Sets

A textbook classic, midi skirts can be the end all be all. Vests with low necklines and leather boots are just the recipe for a lady on the street, freak in the sheets (if that’s your thing!)

Mind the Blazer

While cropped has been the daily rundown for quite some time, and its time to move on. Add a chic blazer that sits at your hips. Pair it up with black cigarette pants and loafers. Aloof yet sharp.

After-Hours Snooze

The slouchy grandma is gone for an after-office meetup with this Miu Miu ensemble. Style a structured skirt with net details and a buttoned cardigan for the snug, comfy look.

This was one of those articles which was kept in my archive for way too long.
