I feel a major reason of models not being 'popular' in India is due to the lack of fashion enthusiasts with the wealth to support the industry. People like me and you may be up to date with the fashion weeks, yet the ones with the wealth may just want to look good (or like X actor in that pink lehenga) on their wedding. I don't have the statistics, but this can be taken as a case study.
